What Astrology Can Do For You?

Hi everyone,

As my first blog post in English, I don’t want to miss the opportunity to provide my point of view about what is the astrology and what it’s not. I know some people will agree and some others will disagree, as always happens with most of issues, but well…I will take that risk. Here we go!!!

I can imagine that to many of you, the first thing which comes into your mind when hearing the word astrology is the horoscope of the newspaper where is told how our next week will be concerning health, money or love.

You see! It is amazing!

The whole Universe has agreed so that all Taurus natives (including myself) are going to go well or bad altogether, during a certain period of time! How lucky we are! (ironic mode ON)

Obviously, that is categorically incorrect and, from my point of view, this is also one of the things which has damaged the most and is continuing to do to the credibility of the astrology within our society.

So, then…how could we define the astrology? In order to answer this question, nothing better than using a dictionary to shed light on this issue.

Astrology: the study of the movements and relative positions of celestial bodies interpreted as having an influence on present and future human affairs and characters and the natural world.

Once we have found a definition, as Freddy Krueger would say, let’s go part by part.

“The study of the movements and relative positions of celestial bodies”

Here we have the first big difference with respect to the idea of the only important thing is the Sun’s position at our birthday. It seems we should bear more celestial bodies in mind.

We are not only influenced by the Sun, but also by the Moon (as with the tides), by Mercury, by Venus, by Mars and by all the other celestial bodies which are around the Earth. That seems pretty logical, right?

At least, we shouldn’t think we are just influenced by the Sun, because it is a star and by the Moon, because it is close to the Earth, so that we would completely ignore the rest of the planets.

Wait a second! The guy at the end of the class wants to make a question: ‘Excuse me, but all those things you are talking about are pretty similar to the meaning of astronomy, right?

Indeed, astronomy and astrology have been always intimately linked and only during last two centuries, they have taken different ways due to our scientism’s view of the world. However, if you don’t mind, I would rather to leave that issue for a later blog entry for now. It is pretty complex to be explained in a couple of lines. For now, we will just keep that idea in mind for the future.

We continue. ‘…as having an influence on present and future human affairs’

Oh my God! Future human affairs! So, is the astrology able to predict future human affairs?

Let’s see. There is one thing I would like to leave crystal clear. An astrologer IS NOT a fortune-teller. An astrologer is not a man with a crystal ball who is going to tell us: ‘Look, next Tuesday, at 14h37 you are going to receive an inheritance from your uncle because he is going to be run over by a red car. Not, astrology does not work like that.

What astrology allows us is speculating, seeing trends of suffering or enjoying certain events and this is where astrology is really useful.

I like to say that astrology is a bit like the weather forecast, i.e. it tells you if in your city is going to rain and then, up to you to bring an umbrella or not.

What astrology doesn’t say is that it is going to start to rain at 12:27 so, I hope you won’t go to drink a beer without bringing the umbrella with you.

And, of course, even the best astrologer ever makes also mistakes from time to time. As it happens with weather forecasts when we are planning our Easter holidays.

Finally, I will take the last part of the definition: ‘influence on […] human characters and the natural world’.

Wait, there is a question again from the same guy, yes…. the one who made the astronomy question. Suddenly, he has started to clap and he is crying something like…’I cannot believe astrology wants to tell me how I am or how I am not!’

There I must simply agree with the dictionary.

One of the biggest contributions of the astrology is the proof of a direct relationship between the position of the celestial bodies (as you can see there is nothing ‘esoteric’ here given we only should get a telescope and check the position of Uranus, Saturn or the Moon at that particular stage) and our personality, our health issues, the kind of people we like or dislike or even the kind of job we will develop in the future. However, I prefer to use the word trend rather than knowledge (in a strict sense). There are strong trends (something is going to happen practically for sure with a 99% probability) and weak trends.

We leave it here for now. Did you like this post? Did it help you to understand a bit better what is the astrology? I hope so. Now, don’t be shy and make all questions you wish. Go ahead!

Greetings. I wish you the best!
